  • Boys volleyball is a spring sport.
  • You do not have to host matches if you don’t want to.
  • Title IX should not be a barrier — most schools can use 1 of the 3 prong test to make it work.
  • Have an adult coach present at all matches.
  • Secure your school Athletic Director’s approval.
  • Wear a uniform with school name, mascot and/or logo on it, a jersey with the number on the front and back, and black (or uniform color) shorts. Refer to NFHS guidelines for specifics.
  • Register and pay online or send $150 league entry fee (made payable to GRCHS Athletics) to:

Michigan High School Boys Volleyball History

Spring 2018
The inaugural season saw the formation of the four-school West Michigan Boys Volleyball Conference, comprised of Allendale, Grand Rapids Christian, Grand Haven, and Kalamazoo Christian.  Grand Haven won the first-ever Conference Champion. Additionally, West Ottawa formed a team.

Spring 2019
Our second season saw a name change to MIBoysVB to reflect the larger statewide footprint. Twelve schools formed two divisions. The Metro division includes Bath, Battle Creek St. Philip, GR Christian, Kalamazoo Christian, Lansing, and Lowell. The Lakeshore division is comprised of Allendale, Grand Haven, Mona Shores, Reeths Puffer, South Christian, and West Ottawa. The Metro division crowned co-champions Kalamazoo Christian and GR Christian and the Lakeshore division crowned West Ottawa. In the first ever post-season Regional Championship, Grand Haven beat GR Christian for the title.

Spring 2020
Despite tremendous interest, we lost this year due to COVID.

Spring 2021
There were 3 divisions:

  1. Central:  Covenant Christian, Grand Rapids Christian, Hudsonville, Kalamazoo Christian, Lowell (Conference Champs), South Christian, and Sparta
  2. West: Allendale, Grand Haven (Conference Champs), Holland Christian, Mona Shores, Reeths Puffer, Spring Lake, and West Ottawa
  3. East:  Bath, Calhoun Christian, Detroit Catholic Central, Lansing Christian (Conference Champs, and North Branch

District Champs:  Hudsonville, Lowell, Mona Shores, and South Christian
Regional Champ:  Hudsonville

Spring 2022:
The league was comprised of 37 schools in 5 divisions:  West, Grand Rapids North, Grand Rapids South, Central, and East.  Conference champs were crowned in the 5 divisions (Grand Haven, Lansing Christian, Lowell, Northville and co-champs Hudsonville & South Christian).  Eight district champs emerged in the state tournament play (Grand Haven, Grand Rapids Christian, Hudsonville, Lansing Christian, Lowell, Northville, Sparta, Swartz Creek).  Regional champs were Grand Haven, Hudsonville, Lansing Christian, Lowell.  Hudsonville defeated Grand Haven to be the Tournament Champions.

Spring 2023:

This year the league grew once again to 58 teams and 9 divisions: Lakeshore, Grand Rapids West, Grand Rapids North, Grand Rapids South, South, Central, Ann Arbor, Detroit West and Detroit North. The 9 conference champions were Grand Haven, Hudsonville, Lowell, South Christian, (co-champs) Kalamazoo Christian and St. Joseph, Lansing Christian, Ann Arbor United, Northville, and Macomb Dakota.

2023 was the first year we divided the state into Division 1 and Division 2.  Division 1 had 8 districts with Grand Haven, Hudsonville, Rockford, Calhoun Christian, Lansing Christian, Saline, North Farmington and Macomb Dakota emerging as district champs. Grand Haven, Lansing Christian, Hudsonville and Saline. Hudsonville and Grand Haven both won their Semi-Final matches and advanced to the State Tournament Final to face each other for the second year in a row.  Hudsonville came out on top as the Division 1 State Champion!

Division 2 had four districts with South Christian, Lowell, Forest Hills Eastern, and Detroit Catholic Central being crowned champs.  South Christian and Lowell both advanced to face each other in the Division 2 Finals.  After a hard fought match by both sides, Lowell was victorious and was crowned the Division 2 State Champion!

2024 –

As the 2024 season gets underway the league has grown once again.  There are now 69 teams in 11 conferences.  Boys volleyball in Michigan continues to grow in popularity. The league has applied to be a recognized sport by the MHSAA.  We anxiously await their decision!
